about nurvuss.
you want to know more about this ol gal? well, shucks.
my name is bobby (he/him) and i am a midwestern american boy of a certain vintage. i have been living in london, uk since 2001. i feel like i've lived a bunch of lifetimes since then.
as a kid, i always wanted to make video games. the tools weren't really there back then so the bar to entry was quite high, and i was also really bad at math. during my preteen and teenage years i was a prolific user of the MS-DOS engine ZZT. but as i became angstier and more interested in looking cool (i never did), i moved on to music and sound design.
i started making noise music as a teenager in my bedroom, but eventually i taught myself the bare minimum of note progression and during the mid-00s i wrote music and performed as part of the synthpop duo no kisses (we were actually kinda popular! we opened for s'express one time) and then later solo under the name nurvuss, making noisier synthpunk. during this period i was also involved in at least a half-dozen or more short-lived experimental bands, and i once played live bass for princess julia's punk improv 'supergroup' oral oral.
from 2007 to 2012, i hosted the sporadic post-punk club night the liberty snake alongside a revolving roster of guest DJs, hosting many of london's then-up-and-coming alternative musicians, frequently in coordination with fellow impresarios brave exhibitions, behind bars, decasia, reeperbahn, endurance/future brain/tesco disco, and illFM, among many other curators i've probably failed to mention here who were no less important. my partner and i hosted a couple of last hurrahs as club jigoku from 2012-2013, but by this time my evenings were taken up by pursuing a postgraduate degree, and the writing was on the wall as iconic venues shuttered to make way for unaffordable luxury housing.
my true passion has always remained video games, and i've been writing/blabbing about them on-line in various guises since 2005. i'm a narrative junkie who's particularly passionate about RPGs and horror games, so you'll probably see me frequently lean into those directions. my tastes tend to skew towards older platforms (90s and 00s) but i reject the moniker "retro games", because we don't talk about "retro books" or "retro films" and The Good Stuff is timeless.
some of my other interests include manga & anime (of course), podcasts, alternative comedy, science fiction & cyberpunk, detective fiction, body horror, ero-guro nansensu, surrealism, dadaism & postmodernism, underground theatre, mythology, urban legends, yōkai, city pop & kayōkyoku, industrial, noise & musique concrete, gunpla, cats, cooking and a bunch of other stuff probably.
borscht
borscht is our russian blue/ragdoll mix. we adopted him from my partner's tattooist when he was a kitten many years ago. he's incredible large, a dandy old man, and a good boy.
